NEWS RELEASE
TheatreMidwest to present free play reading of “Burst” by Rachel Bublitz, inspired by the Elizabeth Holmes/Theranos scandal, at the Des Moines Botanical Garden in February. Des Moines, IA (February, 2022) – Inspired by the recent downfall of the much-lauded tech start-up, Theranos, and its infamous founder Elizabeth Holmes, Burst offers an exceptional exploration of the power dynamics between professional women and the ethics of saving the world through venture capitalism. The play won Bublitz several awards including Semi-Finalist at MACH33: Festival of New Science-Driven Plays from Caltech, and the Bay Area Playwrights Festival in 2019. Burst - Not only did Sarah Boyd build her company, Tactix, from scratch using nothing but willpower and fortitude, she also sits on the precipice of truly saving this planet by ushering it into the post-plastic era. With her eyes steady on her next round of funding, Sarah must persevere through a late night interview with a particularly tough reporter, a lawsuit aimed at a person from her past, and the waffling of her CTO. It's a heavy load, and Sarah knows that she is the only one great enough to bear it. TheatreMidwest will present this play for free at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden as part of its Fresh Produce Concert Reading Series. The series is designed to provide accessible theatre going opportunities to people of the Midwest. The reading is directed by Jennifer Allton (New Richmond, WI) and features actors: Katie Braden (New York, NY), Erin Tracy (Ankeny, IA), Jacklin Stonewall (Ames, IA), and Audrey Kaus (Waukee, IA). Burst performs Saturday, February 12 at 7:30pm (CST) and Sunday, February 13 at 2:00pm (CST). A Q&A with the cast and company will follow the Sunday performance. Reservations are encouraged, but not required, for in-person attendees. An online streaming option is also available. RSVP or sign up to stream at TheatreMidwest.org.
